Fedora Core Release Naming
Around the time of every Fedora Core release, the Fedora development community goes through a big debate over what the
codename should be. You know, that strange word you see in parentheses above the login prompt: "Fedora Core 3
(Heidelberg)". For Fedora Core 4, we've decided to let you pick the name, and we're going to do it in a way
that recognizes how fortunate we are to have the chance to hack on free software. The codename for Fedora Core 4 will
be the one that receives the largest total amount of charity donations given in honor of that name.
This is a great opportunity to be involved in a fun aspect of the Fedora Core release process, while at the
same time making a serious impact on people's lives.
How can you participate? First, pick the codename that you want to "vote" for. Then, pick the charity you want to use
to cast your vote. Follow the link below to the charity's donation page. The gift should be given in honor of, in
memorial of, or in memory of "Fedora Core <codename>" (replacing <codename> with your codename choice).
The e-mail acknowledgement should be sent to naming@fedora.redhat.com. The snail mail acknowledgement should be sent
to:
Elliot Lee
1801 Varsity Drive
Raleigh, NC 27606
USA
Make sure that the donation amount is included in the letter to recipient(s).

FAQs
- Why isn't my favorite charity on the list of approved charities?
-
All of the charities chosen allowed online acknowledgement of donations, which is necessary to let us tally the votes.
Within that constraint, we attempted to choose charities that represented a wide variety of causes that would appeal
to a broad spectrum of persuasions, while at the same time limiting the selection to make the votes easy to process.
- How can I vote for a name that's not on the list of codename choices?
-
Unfortunately, codename choices have to be scrutinized for potential legal problems before they are available.
- This is so cool! Who thought up this idea?
- Kudos go to Jef

The Rules
For each dollar you donate to one of the named "Approved Charities" in honor of an "Approved Codename Choice", one
vote will be cast for that name. In order for your vote to be counted, you must make sure that the appropriate contact
information receives the acknowledgement and that the donation is made in honor of "Fedora Core <codename>".
Donations through charities other than the Approved Charities will not be counted as votes. Donations made for
codenames other than the Approved Codename Choices will not be counted as votes. Once donations are made, the
associated votes cannot be retracted. Donations must be made by May 9, 2005.
