For a less applied, more big-picture book, you might be interested in Alan Cooper's The Inmates are Running the Asylum, which is in part an extended (and fun to read) rant, but also contains some interesting case studies, examples, and practical suggestions.

Cooper's book is really aimed at non-programmers, and makes suggestions about development team organization, project management, etc. as well as technical suggestions.

Alan Cooper has a more practical, "how-to" style book as well, called About Face 2.0 - be sure to get the brand-new 2.0 edition, rather than the now-somewhat-dated original.

Everyone on earth recommends The Design of Everyday Things, by Donald Norman. This is another good book to check out.
